How We Forge

From bar stock to belt sheath.

Every Viper Edge blade goes through the same seven stages. There are no shortcuts in this list.

1. Steel selection

We choose the steel for the job, not for the spec sheet. A skinner and a chopper want different things from their steel — edge retention versus impact toughness. See our Steel Guide for what we use and why.

2. Forging

The bar goes into the forge until it reaches working heat, then onto the anvil. Hammer work moves the steel and refines its grain structure. This is where the blade gets its profile, its distal taper, and its character.

3. Normalizing

Forging stresses steel. We cycle the blade through controlled heating and cooling to relieve that stress and even out the grain before hardening. Skipping this is why cheap knives crack.

4. Grinding

Bevels are ground in by hand on the belt grinder. The grind angle is matched to the knife's purpose — thin and keen for kitchen work, stouter for batoning and field use.

5. Heat treat and temper

Quench to harden, then temper to bring the brittleness back down. This is the single biggest difference between a knife that holds an edge and one that rolls or chips.

6. Handle and fit

Scales are shaped, drilled, pinned, and epoxied, then sanded flush to the tang. Woods, micarta, resin, bone, horn — fitted to that individual blade.

7. Sharpening and sheath

Progressive sharpening to a working edge, final inspection, and a sheath cut and stitched for that exact knife.
