Green wood cuts easily when it is fresh off the tree, and a spoon starts with long slicing passes that take the waste off a split blank. That is the work this one is for. The head is Damascus over a high carbon core and the handle is burl wood set in resin. At 14 inches overall your hand goes up under the steel.

The head
The steel is Damascus, pattern welded over a high carbon core and etched so the twist shows dark against bright. The edge is a fine bright line. The shape is bearded, so the edge sweeps down well below the eye, which leaves room for your fingers up against the steel when you want control. The edge is long and curved, and the bevel is about 30 degrees on both sides, so it cuts the same in a right or a left hand. Carbon steel darkens with handling and rusts if it goes away wet.
The handle
The handle is burl wood, stabilised and set in resin so the soft figured grain is filled and held solid. Burl on its own moves and crumbles. The eye is wedged. The handle is driven up through the head from below, a wooden wedge is driven into the top to spread it tight against the steel, and a steel wedge is set across that. Fourteen inches is short. You work near the butt for roughing and slide up under the beard for finer cuts.
The leather head cover
The cover is vegetable tanned leather cut to the outline of this head, so the beard sits inside it and the whole edge is covered. It is stitched by hand with a welt run into the seam. The face is hand carved with a rose and scroll design and a brass snap holds the strap. Put it on dry. Leather holds moisture, and a cover over a wet bit is how rust starts.
Who it suits
Anyone roughing out shapes in green wood, where the cut is a slice not a swing. It is not a hewing axe and it is not a broad axe.

Every piece is different
Every head is forged, ground and etched by hand, so the twist comes out differently on each one. Burl is worse again. No two blocks carry the same figure and the resin takes color its own way. Yours will not match the photographs. That is what buying one made by hand means.
Looking after it
Wipe the head dry after use and oil it before it goes away. The handle wants boiled linseed oil, three to five coats on a new one over as many days, then once a year. Is this a hewing axe? No. It is a carving axe for green wood, for roughing out spoons and bowls.
Can I use it left handed? Yes. The bevel is about 30 degrees on both sides, so it cuts either way.
How is the head held on? The handle is driven up through the eye from below, a wooden wedge spreads it tight against the steel and a steel wedge sits across that.
Will it rust? It can. Dry it after use, oil it before storage, and keep the cover off a wet head.
Does the handle feel like plastic? No. It is real burl with the voids filled.
