D2 Tool Steel

Semi stainless, high chromium and stubborn about going dull. D2 holds a working edge far longer than simple carbon steels, which makes it the practical choice for hunters and daily carry. It is harder to resharpen when it finally needs it, a fair trade for how rarely that happens.

D2 is not stainless, whatever it looks like. There is enough chromium in it to resist rust far better than 1095, and not enough to make it stainless, so it still wants a wipe down after a wet day. What you get in return is a blade that goes through a whole season of field dressing without a serious touch up.

Compare the steels side by side in the Steel Guide. If you sharpen often and want the easiest steel to bring back, look at 1095 high carbon. If you want the pattern and the craft, look at Damascus steel.
