Out of the scabbard and laid alongside it, this one takes up more table than people expect. The blade is 35 inches of 1095 high carbon, hand rubbed satin with bright bevels, and the grip behind it runs 9 inches. At the end sits a faceted pear shaped iron pommel, flats cut into it so it catches light one side at a time. Overall, 45 inches.

The blade
The steel is 1095 high carbon, with the flats hand rubbed and the bevels brought up bright. The blade narrows the whole way, so the shape stays honest at 35 inches instead of turning into a plank. The fuller sits near the hilt only, a narrow groove in the wide part where the steel is thickest, and it takes weight out of the centre without making the blade any narrower. Past that point the width has already gone out of it. Carbon steel darkens as it ages and it spots if you leave it wet.
The hilt
The guard is a straight iron crossguard. The grip is 9 inches of wooden core wrapped in oxblood leather cord, long enough for two hands with room between them. That length is the character of the piece. A short grip puts everything in one fist. A long one spreads it. The pommel is iron, pear shaped with flats cut around it. The tang comes through the grip and out of the top, where the end is hammered until it spreads and holds the stack together.
The scabbard
Tooled leather over a wooden core, the full 35 inches of it. The core keeps the shape and takes the edge off contact with everything else. The face is stamped in a basket weave, the throat is brass, the tip cap is brass, and the seam is stitched by hand. It is not a case to store a damp blade in. Leather traps damp against steel and that is where trouble starts.
Who it suits
People underestimate a longsword on a screen. Then it turns up and the wall it was going on is the wrong wall. Measure first. It goes on a wall, never to anybody who means to cut with it.

Every piece is different
Every blade is forged, ground and finished by hand, so runs stay small and no two are alike. On a blade this long the hand rubbed lines take a while, and they land their own way. The facets on the pommel are filed by eye. Yours will not match the photograph.
Looking after it
Wipe the whole blade with a soft cloth after handling, which here means going back for the far end you skipped. A light film of oil over the steel before it goes up. No abrasive polish, since it kills the satin lines and they do not come back. If the sword or the scabbard has been damp, keep them apart until dry. More on our knife care and sharpening page.
Put a name on it
Laser engraving is 20 dollars per piece and goes on the scabbard rather than the blade. There is room on a scabbard this long, though around 30 characters is still the sensible limit. Questions buyers ask
How much wall does it need? It is 45 inches overall. Measure before you order.
What does a 9 inch grip change? It gives room for two hands, and puts more length behind the guard.
Why is the fuller only near the hilt? That is where the blade is widest. The groove takes weight out of the centre there, and the rest is already narrow.
Will it rust? It can. 1095 is carbon steel, so it darkens and spots if left wet.
How long does shipping take? Most US orders arrive in 5 to 7 business days.
Can I own one? Laws on owning and carrying a sword differ by state, city and country, so check your local rules before you buy, and we cannot advise on that.
