This is a belt on its own. No sheath and no knife, nothing hanging off it in the box. It is vegetable tanned full grain leather, 1.5 inches wide, stamped basket weave the whole length, with a solid brass buckle. It is cut to your waist, not pulled off a rack. Most belts hold trousers up. This one is built to be what everything else hangs off.

The leather

The leather is vegetable tanned full grain in tan. Bark tanning rather than chrome salts leaves the fibre firm enough to hold its line and open enough to change colour. A new belt is pale. Wear takes it deeper, and the buckle end goes first because that is where the hands are. Chrome tanned leather stays the shade it was dyed. Vegetable tanned leather holds a stamp, which is why the basket weave is there at all. It is struck into damp leather, one blow at a time, in rows down the strap, inside a border.

How it is made

The strap is cut in one length from a single hide, not joined from two short pieces. A belt has no welt, so the work goes to the buckle end. The leather folds round the bar and is skived where it doubles, so the fold does not sit fat in the keeper. That fold is hand stitched in cream thread, two needles through one hole, so a cut stitch stays put instead of running. Buckle and keeper are solid brass. Edges are bevelled and burnished dark until they go hard.

How it carries

At 1.5 inches it goes through any loop cut for a 1.5 inch belt, which covers most jeans and most work trousers. It is cut to order for a 30 to 44 inch waist. Measure a belt you already wear, from the buckle fold to the hole you use. A thin dress belt folds over the moment you hang weight on it, and a sheath sitting in that fold swings and rubs.

Who it suits

For anyone who has hung a sheath on a good looking belt and watched the belt lose.

  • People who carry a sheath or a pouch on the waist
  • Anyone tired of replacing a soft belt
  • Buyers who want a stamped pattern, not a plain strap
  • Waists from 30 to 44 inches

What comes in the box

  • The hand tooled leather belt, 1.5 inches wide
  • The solid brass buckle and keeper, fitted
  • A care card
  • No sheath and no knife are included

Every piece is different

No two straps come out the same. The hide has its own marks and its own thirst for dye, so tan runs lighter on one belt and warmer on the next. The weave is struck by hand, so the rows sit where the hand put them. Yours will not match the photograph.

Looking after it

Keep it out of standing water. If it gets soaked, dry it slowly somewhere cool, never on a radiator and never in an oven, because heat cooks leather stiff for good. Feed it with a leather conditioner once or twice a year, a thin coat rubbed in. If you carry steel on it, dry the blade first, since steel left in damp leather is how good blades get pitted. More on our knife care and sharpening page.

Put a name on it

Initials go on with a stamp, not a laser, pressed into damp leather so the mark darkens along with the belt. It is 20 dollars per piece and around 20 characters fits. We send a proof image to approve first, since a stamp cannot be taken back out, and it adds 3 to 5 business days. Ten pieces or more and it is free. Details on the engraving page.

Questions buyers ask

Does a sheath or a knife come with it? No. You get the belt and its buckle. Sheaths and knives are sold separately.

What size do I order? We cut for a 30 to 44 inch waist. Measure an old belt, buckle fold to the hole you use.

Will it hold a sheath without sagging? That is what the weight of the leather is for. It stays flat under load.

Will it fit my belt loops? It fits loops cut for a 1.5 inch belt. Some dress trousers use narrower ones, so check.

Will the brass go dull? Yes. Most people leave it. A cloth brings the shine back.

How long does shipping take? Most US orders arrive in 5 to 7 business days.

To hang a sheath below the belt line there are the leather dangler belt loops, and the six pocket knife roll wears the same weave. The rest sits in sheaths and accessories, this one under gifts for him, and the newest work in new arrivals.
