A dangler is a short leather strap that hangs your sheath a few inches below your belt instead of against it. This is a pair of them, cut from vegetable tanned full grain leather with solid brass press studs. No sheath comes with them and no knife comes with them. You are buying two leather loops and the studs that shut them.

The leather
Vegetable tanned full grain, tan, which means bark tanned rather than chrome tanned. That matters on a strap that moves. Vegetable tanned leather firms up as it is handled and it darkens, so the pale tan in the photographs will go amber and then a deeper brown over a year of wear. Chrome tanned leather stays the color it was dyed. Bark tanning is also why a stamp holds its shape. The basket weave is struck into the leather while it is damp, one tool at a time, row by row.
How it is made
Each loop is cut, stamped, folded and stitched. There is no welt in a dangler, since no blade edge rides against the thread. Stitching is by hand in cream thread, two needles through the same hole, so one worn stitch does not open the row. The raw edges are rubbed down with water and friction until they go hard and glossy, which keeps them from fuzzing on a belt. Hardware is solid brass press studs, four of them, two to a loop.
How it carries
The top of the loop wraps over your belt and studs shut. The bottom takes the belt loop or back strap of your sheath and studs shut the same way. The sheath hangs below the belt on a short link rather than pinned flat against your hip. It swings forward when you drop into a truck seat and tips aside when you kneel. Undoing two studs takes the sheath off without unthreading your belt.
Who it suits
Most of these go to people who already own a sheath and have got tired of it.
- Anyone in and out of a truck cab all day
- People who wear a sheath under a coat
- Anyone whose sheath digs in when they kneel
- Someone who wants it off without unthreading a belt
What comes in the box
- Two dangler belt loops
- Four solid brass press studs, already set
- No sheath and no knife are included
- Lifetime warranty on the stitching and the hardware
Every piece is different
Each loop is cut from a hide that grew on an animal, so the grain and the small marks in it change piece to piece. The basket weave is struck by hand and no two rows land identically. What arrives will look like the photographs without matching them stroke for stroke.
Looking after it
Keep them out of standing water. If they get soaked, let them dry slowly away from heat, never on a radiator or in an oven. Feed them with a leather conditioner once or twice a year. Do not leave a wet sheath on a wet dangler in a closed bag, since damp leather held against steel is how a blade gets pitted. More is on our knife care and sharpening page.
Put a name on it
Initials are stamped into the leather, not lasered. A steel stamp is struck into the damp face and the mark deepens as the leather does. It is 20 dollars per piece and around 20 characters fits. We send a proof image before anything is struck, which adds 3 to 5 business days. Stamping is free on orders of 10 or more. The engraving page covers the rest.
Questions buyers ask
How long does shipping take? Most US orders arrive in 5 to 7 business days.
Does a knife or a sheath come with these? No. Two loops and four brass press studs, nothing else.
What belts do they fit? Belts up to 1.75 inches wide.
Will my sheath swing about too much? It swings more than it did, which is the point of hanging it low.
Why two of them? So a second sheath can be set up too.
Can I take a loop off again? Yes. Two studs open and it lifts off the belt.
A thin dress belt folds under a loaded sheath, so the 1.5 inch belt with a solid brass buckle is cut heavy. If the sheath is what you are missing, the plain hand stitched belt sheath for a 4 to 5 inch blade is what these usually hang under. The leather all sits in sheaths and accessories, some of it in gifts for him, and this season's cutting in new arrivals.
