Some knives live in a drawer. This one gets looked at. A line of crushed turquoise runs down the middle of each camel bone scale, inlaid and sanded flush so the blue sits level with the bone under your thumb, and the leather roll carries a sunflower carved by hand rather than stamped. Three knives, a chef knife, a bread knife and a paring knife, all full tang. Most leave the shop as presents.

The steel
All three blades are Damascus, pattern welded over a high carbon core. The pattern is twist, so the layers read as long spiralling swirls instead of straight bands. The etch is done after grinding, which is why the light and dark layers carry down through the bevel to the edge rather than stopping where the grind starts. There is carbon under that pattern, so the steel takes a keen edge and comes back on a stone quickly, and it darkens with use and rusts if it is put away wet.
The handles
The scales are camel bone, polished to a warm cream with its natural markings showing. Each scale is channeled down the middle, filled with crushed turquoise and sanded back flush, so you feel one surface and see two materials. Brass pins run through into the steel, and the tang is full on all three, so the steel carries the whole length of the handle and shows as a line round the bone. Chef, bread and paring wear the same handle.
The knife roll
The roll is vegetable tanned leather, one long panel with a stitched pocket per knife, that rolls up and ties shut with its own strap. The face is hand carved with a sunflower inside a beaded border. Carving is a different job from stamping. A basket weave is one square stamp struck into damp leather row by row, so every square matches. A sunflower is cut freehand with a swivel knife, a small blade turned in the fingers to follow the line, then beveled and shaded so the petals stand off the ground.
Who it suits
This is a set bought as a present. The turquoise and the carved leather do their work the moment the roll is opened, and three knives cover most of a home board.

Every piece is different
Each blade is forged, ground, heat treated and sharpened by hand, so runs stay small and no two sets finish alike. The twist pattern, the bone markings, the shade of the turquoise and the carved sunflower all differ from the photographs.
Looking after it
Hand wash all three and dry them straight away. Never leave one in the sink or a dishwasher. Damascus darkens with use, and that gray patina is normal and protects the steel. Wipe on a light coat of food safe mineral oil before storing. Sharpen the chef and paring knife on a stone following the bevel. The bread knife takes a round rod worked in each scallop, not a flat stone. More is on our knife care page.
Put a name on it
Engraving is 35 dollars for the set, added on this page, and that single price takes in all three knives. It is an option, so the set arrives plain unless you choose it. Around 30 characters fits on a blade. We send a proof image before the laser runs, and it adds 3 to 5 business days. See the engraving page.
Questions buyers ask
How many knives are in the set? Three, a chef knife, a bread knife and a paring knife. The roll is included.
Is the leather roll included? Yes. It is vegetable tanned leather with a pocket per knife, and it ties shut.
Does the set come engraved? No. Engraving is an option at 35 dollars for the set, added on this page.
What is a Damascus pattern? It is the figure left by welding layers of steel and etching them. Twist reads as long spiralling swirls.
Why is the bread knife serrated? The teeth saw through a crust without crushing what is under it. It is the only serrated blade.
Can they go in the dishwasher? No. Hand wash and dry them right away.
A bigger version is the five piece Damascus set in burl wood, and a plainer one is the olive wood set. More is in kitchen knife sets, gift sets and bone handle knives.
