There is always small work at a camp. Limbs to take off a fallen trunk, kindling to split off a round, a tent peg to point. This one does that, then goes back into a leather cover that took longer to make than the head did. The steel is Damascus, pattern welded over a high carbon core, the handle is walnut, and it stands 19 inches.

The head
The head is 6.5 inches long and the cutting edge measures 3.5 inches. It is Damascus, pattern welded over a high carbon core, then etched so a twist pattern runs across the whole head. The bevel is taken to a fine bright edge. The cheeks stay thin behind it, which is what lets a head of this weight bite into a green limb instead of bouncing off. Carbon steel sits under the pattern, so it darkens as you use it and will spot with rust if it goes away wet. Dry it.
The handle
Walnut is the wood people ask for when the axe will be looked at as well as used. It is stable and takes oil well. The eye is friction fit. The haft is tapered and drops in from the top, no wedge anywhere, and the head lifts straight off. A new handle goes on in a minute and hafts cost little. At 19 inches you get a full swing in one hand and room to slide up near the steel for finer cuts.
The leather head cover
The cover is vegetable tanned leather, cut to this head's own outline. The face is carved by hand in oak leaf and acanthus, worked while the leather is damp so it stands proud once dry. The edge is welted, which keeps the stitching clear of the bevel, and the whole cover is hand stitched. A brass snap holds the strap. It goes on dry, since leather over a wet head holds water against the steel.

Every piece is different
Every head is forged, etched and sharpened by hand, so runs stay small and no two finish alike. The twist lies its own way in each billet. Walnut shifts from light brown to almost purple depending on the board, and every cover is carved freehand, so the leaves sit differently on yours.
Looking after it
Wipe the head dry after use and oil it before it goes away. The walnut wants boiled linseed oil, three to five coats over as many days on a new handle, then once a year. Never varnish it. Rags soaked in linseed oil can catch fire on their own if they are left balled up indoors, so lay them flat outside. Sharpening is free for life. More on our knife care and sharpening page.

Questions buyers ask
Is the cover carved by hand? Yes. Every face is cut and shaded by hand, so no two sets of leaves match.
What holds the head on with no wedge? Friction. The tapered haft slides in from the top and the swing seats it tighter. Knock the butt down if it feels loose.
Will it rust? It can. Carbon steel sits under the pattern. Dry the head after use and keep a light film of oil on it.
Can I use it, or is it just for a shelf? Use it. It is sharpened like the plain ones, and the cover keeps the edge safe.
How long does shipping take? Most US orders arrive in 5 to 7 business days.
What if the handle breaks? Pull the head off and fit another. Nothing is glued or wedged.
