The blade

The steel started as a farrier rasp, high carbon tool steel that did its first job under hoof. Forged flat, it keeps the original file teeth readable in tight rows across the flats. The forge finish is left dark with the edge taken bright, so there is a clean line right where the work happens. A wide belly under a low point lays most of the edge on the cut, so it slices better than it pokes. Rasp steel is not stainless. It patinas with use, and rusts if put away wet.

The handle

The handle runs 4 inches against 3 inches of blade, and that ratio is the point of the pattern. A bull cutter is worked with the hand choked forward and the thumb riding the spine, so there has to be more handle than blade to push against and steer with. Rosewood is dense, takes a deep red brown polish, and holds grip when hands are cold or damp. Brass pins run through the full tang, steel unbroken from tip to butt.

The pancake sheath

Two flat panels of leather stitched face to face with a welt down the edge side, then two wide belt slots punched through both layers, one ahead of the blade pocket and one behind. The belt threads through the sheath itself instead of hanging off a single loop, so it sits flat and sideways on the hip. It does not dig in when you sit in a truck or a saddle, and it does not swing. It can ride straight, canted or horizontal for a cross draw. This one is tooled with a rope pattern around the border.

Every knife here is forged, ground and finished by hand, so runs stay small and no two come out alike. The rosewood grain, the color of the forge finish and the depth of the rope tooling will vary from the photographs.

Looking after it

Wash it by hand and dry it right away. Never the dishwasher, never left soaking, since dishwasher damage voids the warranty. Rasp steel is high carbon, so wipe it down and oil it lightly before storage. Let the leather dry slowly and away from heat. Sharpen on a whetstone at roughly 20 degrees per side, then strop.
