Most swords get thinner as they go out. This one does the opposite. Pulled out and set beside its scabbard, the falchion is 26 inches of 1095 high carbon, single edged, widening as it runs out until the last stretch is the broadest part of it. The spine is dark from the forge with one wide bright bevel under it. At the back, a flat iron disc pommel.

The blade
The steel is 1095 high carbon, single edged, with the forge skin left dark along the spine and one wide bevel ground bright below it. The width grows as the blade runs out, so the heavy end of this shape is the far end. There is no fuller. A fuller is a groove that takes weight out of the centre of a blade without narrowing it. This one is flat ground instead, the steel carrying straight across each face. Carbon steel darkens with age and it spots if left wet.
The hilt
The crossguard is short and straight, in iron, no longer than it needs to be under a blade this broad. The grip is a wooden core wrapped in dark brown leather cord. The pommel is a plain flat disc of iron, and against all that width out front it has work to do. The tang runs the whole way through the grip and out of the top of the pommel, where the end is hammered until it spreads. You can see it on top of the disc.
The scabbard
Tooled leather over a wooden core, cut wide at the bottom to take this blade. The core holds the shape and keeps the edge off everything else, and the leather is the part on show, stamped in a basket weave. Brass throat at the mouth, brass tip cap at the bottom, hand stitched along the seam. It is not a storage case for a blade that has been anywhere damp.
Who it suits
Line this up beside a narrow blade and it looks like the odd one out, because it is. The mass sits somewhere else. It hangs on a wall, never with anybody who means to cut with it.

Every piece is different
Every blade is forged and ground on its own, so runs are small and no two are alike. The dark forge skin falls where it falls, and the line between dark and bright is never the same twice. The width at the end is filed by eye. Yours will not be the one photographed.
Looking after it
Wipe it with a soft cloth after handling. The bright bevel shows prints and the dark spine hides them, and both want the same treatment. A light film of oil before it goes up. No abrasive polish, since it takes the forge skin off the spine and that does not grow back. If it has been damp, keep the blade out of the scabbard. More on our knife care and sharpening page.

Questions buyers ask
Why is it wider at the end? That is the falchion shape. The width builds as the blade runs out instead of narrowing.
Where does the weight sit? Out past your hand, further than on any other sword we make.
Why is there no fuller? The blade is flat ground. A groove would take out weight this shape is meant to have.
What does the peened tang mean? The tang comes out of the top of the pommel and is hammered until it spreads.
How long does shipping take? Most US orders arrive in 5 to 7 business days.
Can I own one? Laws on owning and carrying a sword differ by state, city and country, so check your local rules before you buy, and we cannot advise on that.
