The blade

The steel started as a farrier rasp, high carbon tool steel that spent its first life under hoof, with the original file teeth left readable across the flats. At 4 inches this is one of the larger knives in the batch, and the long upswept belly is the reason to pick it. More curve means more edge rolling through the cut on one pull, so it skins and breaks down an animal better than the shorter versions. Rasp steel is not stainless. It takes a patina, sharpens easily, and rusts if stored damp.

The handle

The handle runs 4.25 inches against 4 inches of blade, so even on the long version of this pattern there is more handle than blade. A bull cutter is driven with the hand choked forward and the thumb riding the spine, and the hand needs somewhere to push. Bone is polished smooth here, cream white and close grained, and it stays cool and firm in the palm without the slickness of a plastic scale. Brass pins run through the full tang.

The pancake sheath

Two flat panels of leather stitched face to face with a welt down the edge side, then two wide belt slots punched through both layers, one ahead of the blade pocket and one behind. The belt passes through the sheath itself instead of hanging off a single loop, so it sits flat and sideways on the hip. It does not dig in when you sit in a truck or a saddle, and it does not swing. It can be worn straight, canted or horizontal for a cross draw. This one carries a barbed wire border.

Looking after it

Wash it by hand and dry it right away. Never the dishwasher, never left soaking, since dishwasher damage voids the warranty. Rasp steel is high carbon, so wipe it down and oil it lightly before storage. Bone and leather both want dry storage away from heat. Sharpen on a whetstone at roughly 20 degrees per side, then strop.
